Gloucestershire Intermediate String Ensemble (GISE)

GISE allows young string players (grade 4 +) the opportunity to develop their ensemble skills, to tackle challenging repertoire and take their first steps into becoming a county young musician.  GISE will provide an invaluable pool of players for GYO and forms part of our commitment to developing young musicians to their fullest potential.

GISE will provide valuable ensemble experience for young string players who we hope will progress to GYO.   As a member of GISE they will also benefit from regular large string ensemble rehearsals where we bring GYO and GISE members together.  These will also be held on Thursday nights.

GISE will perform throughout the year with performances at the Pittville Pump Room, Music for Youth Regional Festival at the Cheltenham Town Hall and the Stroud Subscription Rooms.

The age range is predominantly 11 - 18 and above, although younger members are always welcome.

If you would like to join GISE, you will need to be a minimum grade 4 level. Grades are only a guide to the level required.  More important is a strong commitment and positive attitude alongside good sight reading and general musicianship skills.

Teachers may recommend students for a specific group but the Musical Director/Orchestral Manager has the final decision to whether a student is ready for entry into an ensemble.

Once you have gained a place in one of the county music groups, you will be required to maintain a high percentage of attendance at rehearsals and concerts.  A place within an ensemble may be withdrawn if commitment is deemed unsatisfactory.

You can ask to join GISE at any point throughout the year.  If a group is preparing for a concert or festival, you may be asked to wait a few weeks before joining.

Thursdays from 7 - 9pm (term time only)

Rehearsals are during term time only.  Please check the full rehearsal schedule on the GM calendar
