Gloucestershire Music hits the right note with new patron

A wonderful, new collaborative relationship with one of this country's most eminent conductors, Martyn Brabbins.

Gloucestershire Music is thrilled to announce its new patron – renowned international conductor Martyn Brabbins.

Martyn is music director of English National Opera, artistic advisor for Huddersfield Choral Society and a visiting Professor of Conducting at the Royal College of Music, as well as a popular figure at the BBC Proms and with most of the leading British orchestras.

The appointment of Martyn, who is a resident of the county, is a coup for Gloucestershire Music and he will be involved in some virtual sessions over the next few months.

Martyn said: “I believe passionately that the opportunity to make music, to participate in the extraordinary magic that music creates, has to be available to all young people. Music and music making enrich the lives of us all and Gloucestershire Music shares this belief, and works tirelessly to bring musical opportunities to all residents of this supremely musical county.

“No coincidence that Holst, Vaughan Williams, Howells, Gurney and other great composers hail from the county and that two of the country’s finest music festivals are based here - Cheltenham and The Three Choirs - both at the heart of this nation’s musical life.”

Cllr Patrick Molyneux, Gloucestershire County Council cabinet member for education, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Martyn Brabbins has agreed to act as Gloucestershire Music’s patron. We are very fortunate to have the opportunity for such collaboration; Martyn will be an inspiration for all musicians in Gloucestershire to follow their musical pathways to the highest level.”

Lisa Mayo, head of Gloucestershire Music, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have Martyn Brabbins as our patron. To have the support of this musician who has become so renowned and celebrated for his incredible musical talents can only serve to inspire our current and future generations and indeed our staff and adult members.”

Gloucestershire Music is part of the county council and a partner within the Make Music Gloucestershire Hub. It is passionate about high quality provision and aims to provide musicians with pathways to move from beginner through to advanced levels.

Working closely with the Government’s guidance, it is hoping to restart some face-to-face activity in the autumn term but in the meantime has been keeping members engaged and motivated in their music making at home with various digital collaborative projects.
