County Music Service Opens its doors!

Gloucestershire Music (LA Music Service) is reaching out the musicians (new and old) from across the County.  With no less than 16 weekly music centres, groups, orchestras and adult ensembles there are opportunities for musicians of all ages and levels to play, progress and perform.

Members of GM continue to fly the flag for our county with national success at major music festivals as well as perform regularly at impressive venues such as Tewkesbury Abbey, Birmingham Symphony Hall and the iconic Royal Albert Hall.  Have a look at the groups we run below or visitwww.gloucestershiremusic.co.uk

The new academic year will see another packed musical diary with visits from professional musicians and bands, regional events and festivals and great concert opportunities.

Weekly youth groups and music centres

Brookfield & Five Valleys Music Centres (BMC and FVMC)

Saturday mornings in Gloucester and Stroud (09:30 – 12:30)
Our two music centres in Gloucester and Stroud offer young string players the chance to develop their ensemble skills under the direction of our experienced tutors.  Music Centres are perfect for those just starting out to the more experienced with a range of other options for you to enjoy including music theory, choirs and folk groups.

Forest of Dean Wind Area Band (FODAWB)

Lakers School, Coleford.  Saturdays (10:00 – 12:00)
FODAWB caters for all Brass, Woodwind and Percussion players aged 7 and over of all standards and ages. Our award-winning Area Wind Band regularly participates in national events such as the National Festival of Music for Youth and the National Concert Band Festival. Adult and youth instrumentalists are welcome to join.

Gloucestershire Youth Wind Orchestra (GYWO)

St Peter’s High School, Gloucester.   Thursdays 6.45pm to 9pm
GYWO are now recognised as one of the country’s top youth wind bands after performances at Music for Youth’s National Festival in 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.  In April 2014, 2016 and 2017 the band represented Gloucestershire at the National Concert Band Festival Finals where they were awarded a Gold Performance Certificate at all three events.

Gloucestershire Youth Orchestra (GYO)

Thursdays, 6:30 – 9pm, St. Peters High School
GYO rehearses on Thursday evenings during term-time, and give many concerts performing programmes that range from the 18th century to the present day.  The orchestra regularly gets to perform at impressive venues such as Tewkesbury Abbey, Cheltenham Town Hall and Birmingham Symphony Hall and, on occasion, work alongside visiting professional tutors.  Membership of GYO is by audition only and is aimed at string players grade 7+.  Players may audition or contact us for an informal chat at any time.

Gloucestershire Youth Jazz Orchestra (GYJO)

Cheltenham Bournside School.  Wednesdays 7 - 9pm
This national award-winning ensemble continues to impress under the leadership of Pete Martin.  To audition for GYJO you will need to be of Grade 6 or above and have a good understanding of the jazz idiom and scales.  Grades are only a guide to the level required.  More important is a strong commitment and positive attitude alongside good sight - reading, confident improvising, musicianship and ensemble skills.

Gloucestershire Youth Jazz Academy (GYJA)

Cheltenham Bournside School.  Wednesdays 6 - 7:30pm
GYJA welcomes committed young musicians from Grade 4 and above keen to develop their skills in jazz and improvisation.  Grades are only a guide to the level required.

 

Weekly adult music groups

Colwell Arts Orchestra (CAO)

Wednesdays, 7 – 9 pm, Colwell Arts Centre,
Colwell Arts Orchestra provides an ideal opportunity for adult players to rediscover and develop their playing skills.  Playing standards are around Grade 4 to Grade 7+.  Many members were already proficient as teenagers and had a strong desire to re-live those rich musical years.  Others are recent starters and have taken up playing as a hobby and now want a musical outlet.

Colwell Arts Jazz Ensemble (CAJE)

Cheltenham Bournside School.  Wednesdays 7 - 9pm
CAJE is a senior level big band for adults grade 5+.  The band gives public performances each year in concert halls, churches and outdoor venues.

Colwell Arts Jazz2Go (J2G)

Cheltenham Bournside School.  Wednesdays 7 - 9pm
Jazz2Go is a training adult jazz ensemble encouraging improvisation and ensemble playing from its members.  Adult Wind, Brass and Percussion players are encouraged to attend and try a rehearsal.

Lakeside Concert Band (LCB)

Lakeside School, Cheltenham.  Thursdays 7- 9pm
LCB is a beginner to intermediate concert band catering for adult players of Grade 1 - 4 standard.  New members are always welcome so feel free to come along to one of our Thursday evening rehearsals to see if our band is for you.  Beginner classes for adults are sometimes available.

Gloucestershire Symphonic Wind Orchestra (GSWO)

Colwell Arts Centre, Gloucester.  Mondays 7 - 9pm
GSWO is aimed at advanced Wind, Brass and Percussion players.  The orchestra plays a wide variety of music, including original 20th century wind band scores through to arrangements of popular and classical music.  Auditions are required.

Five Valleys Adult Wind Band (FVAWB)

Archway School, Stroud.  Saturdays 9.30am to 11.30am
FVAWB is a group specifically for adult players working at Grade 3 standard and above.  The group caters for those who would like to continue learning an instrument whilst at the same time enjoying the experience of being in a band.  We have a wide-ranging repertoire including film, swing, and classical music and play several concerts a year.

 

Steven Legge (Extended Learning and Provisions Manager) said:  GM has some great opportunities for players of all levels and all ages.  We aim to provide opportunities for those taking their very first steps into learning an instrument as well as support advanced musicians.  GM has won many national awards in recent years and are justly proud of their achievements.  Why not join us to find out more.
