Brass instruments

Cornets, trumpets, baritones, euphoniums, horns

Brass instruments are relatively easy to maintain.  There are three valves (generally) and tuning slides that need occasional maintenance.  To oil valves follow the YouTube clips.  Tuning slides can be maintained using a little tuning slide grease.

It is good to have valve oil and tuning slide grease and these are easily available at good music shops or online.  Parents warning – valve oil and grease can be harmful if swallowed or if exposed to skin.   It can also stain clothes.  It is important to read the instructions when you first receive this product.

Trombones

The Trombone comes in three main sections:

  1. Bell section (with the tuning slide at the top)
  2. Slide (this comes apart so be careful)
  3. The mouthpiece

The slide is the part that gets damaged the most easily and it is important you try not to dent this as it can hinder or even stop the slide moving.  To oil or grease the slide, follow the YouTube clip as it will guide you through the safest way to do this.
